Despite not yet reaching the annual peak season (typically from May to October), Con Dao has already welcomed highly positive signs from the ocean in the first quarter of 2026. Records show that 48 mother turtles have returned to nest on the sands of Hon Bay Canh. This is more than just an impressive biological phenomenon; it is a testament to the miraculous instinct of sea turtles—traveling thousands of miles across the vast ocean to return to their birthplace, continuing the sacred journey of life.
Vietnam’s “Capital” for Sea Turtle Conservation
The early and steady appearance of mother turtles since the beginning of the year serves as a great encouragement for forest rangers. It further solidifies Con Dao’s status as the most important “sanctuary” for sea turtle conservation in the country.
Inheriting a scientifically managed conservation program since the 1990s, these waters welcome an average of over 2,000 nesting mother turtles annually and facilitate the release of approximately 150,000 hatchlings back into the ocean. The tireless efforts of Con Dao National Park have earned the region a record for the highest number of incubated and rescued sea turtles in Vietnam.
A Journey of “Giving Birth” Under Human Protection
Conservation here is a meticulous and responsible process. As soon as a mother turtle completes her nesting cycle and returns to the sea, forest rangers—the silent “midwives”—carefully relocate the eggs to artificial incubation nests.
This procedure allows for precise temperature control and protects the eggs from natural threats, predators, or rising tides, thereby optimizing hatching rates. After 45 to 60 days nurtured under the warm sand, the hatchlings emerge and are assisted back to the blue ocean under ideal light and tide conditions, beginning their epic journey of survival.
An Immersive Connection with Nature
For travelers pursuing sustainable tourism, witnessing a mother turtle digging her nest at night or personally releasing “tiny angels” into the ocean is a deeply educational experience. This activity does more than just touch the heart; it spreads awareness about marine protection, turning every individual into a bridge that preserves biodiversity heritage for future generations.
